In the WLE+ column, I shine a light on the organizations and interns. Today, I highlight the work of TILT. (In the name of full disclosure: I will be working at TILT part-time starting in October 2013.)
I have worked with TILT for over a decade as a community partner, volunteer, and consultant. They produce youth media through school-based, after school, and community programming. When I worked at the OMI/Excelsior Beacon Center, they taught engaging workshops to middle school youth, one of which focused on bullying. This was in 2001 when bullying still wasn't the topic de jour.
For the last five years, I have worked with their Generations program, which is an intergenerational media making program for the LGBTQIA community sponsored in partnership with Frameline. This program bring youth and elders together over the course of about three months to make short films that are screened as part of the Frameline festival in June. It is an amazing experience for everyone, one that helps bridge generations, cultures, and perspectives.
I am honored to work with TILT as part of WLE+ because I know that the internship provided by them will be one that will build concrete skills youth can integrate into their creative path, their future jobs, and their life.
Here is TILT in their own words:
TILT, the youth program of the Ninth Street Independent Film Center, teaches young people the fundamentals of movie making and media literacy through hands-on training in video production. TILT programs empower young people to tell their own stories, to work collaboratively, and to become life long learners.
We are very excited to be part of the peer employer internship partnership with 14 Black Poppies and CAT (City Arts and Technology High School). This is our third year hosting a CAT intern as we feel that it is a great opportunity for us to offer professional (and fun) skill building to San Francisco high school students.
